As the country with the largest Muslim population in the world,
Indonesia holds about 13% of the global Muslim population

Indonesia is fourth among the most populous countries in the world. Indonesia’s population is about 200.73 million as of April 2023.

  • As of 2023, the religious distribution of Indonesia is about 87.0% Muslim, 7% Protestant, 3% Catholic, 2% Hindu, 0.72% Buddhist, 0.05% Confucian, and 0.13% other religions.
  • Indonesia, where the Muslim population accounts for a large proportion of the population, maintains its status as a representative Islamic country by promoting
    government-led halal certification and policies, along with the construction of halal industrial complexes in order to provide safe foods to Muslims and develop
    the halal industry in the government level.
  • Demand for halal foods is expected to increase further as halal foods are gaining attention from consumers as healthy and hygienic, particularly in non-Muslim countries
    since post-COVID-19.
  • Halal foods are not only preferred by Muslims but also by other religions including Judaism, Hinduism, and the Baháʼí Faith. Although halal foods are often consumed
    for religious reasons, some consumers prefer them for non-religious reasons.
  • Some consumers choose halal foods due to reasons such as animal welfare and health. Halal foods are highly preferred by consumers who want to consume food
    more safely as they undergo a verification process to ensure food safety and quality.
  • There are consumers in Indonesia who prefer halal products due to health, hygiene, and religious reasons, but there are also consumers who prefer non-halal products
    depending on consumer characteristics by religion.

    Various efforts for the development of the domestic halal economy

    The Indonesian government is making various efforts for the
    development of their domestic halal economy and the importance of
    halal in the Indonesian economy was reaffirmed when Ma’aruf Amin,
    the chairman of the MUI, the highest Islamic authority in Indonesia,
    was appointed as the Vice President of Indonesia in 2019.

    2019–2024

    Under the leadership of the Vice President, the Indonesian
    government announced the “Indonesia Islamic Economic Masterplan
    2019–2024” to present a roadmap to promote the halal economy at
    the government level and enhance policy support.
