Halal Certification
In the past, manufacturers self-declared their products as halal. However, as trade between Muslim and non-Muslim countries increased, Muslim countries began demanding proof of halal which led to a shift towards halal certification by a third party, especially certification institutes in the target country for export.
- Halal foods must comply with Islamic law from production to distribution to be certified.
Thus, most Islamic cultures have adopted the halal certification system that includes
halal foods to assist consumers in making informed choices.
There are currently no internationally unified standards for halal certification due to different interpretations of sharia among countries and sects as well as diverse local customs on dietary cultures.
However, halal certification can be seen as proof that verifies the absence of non-halal ingredients, meats slaughtered in a halal procedure and their content, and the presence of cross-contamination with non-halal foods during the manufacturing process
- Halal certification involves complex processes, and its standards vary by country or institute. However, document review, site inspection, and approval by the Sharia Committee are generally the common steps for the issuance of a halal certificate.
Halal Certification Procedure (Indonesia)
